Help Us Name the Babies!

Last night we had a “special delivery.” Two young orphan fillies needed a hand so we stepped up as there was a need.

Many wild ones get removed from the range that do not go to holding facilities. They find themselves with no real protection under law.

Just recently we saw horses that were removed from BLM and Forest Service (agencies that do fall under the Wild Free Roaming Horse and Burro Act) land but were claimed to be horses from the neighboring Pauite Reservation. Legal action in that issue was not able to stop the removal of horses even though the Forest Service cancelled the participation agreement prior to the start of the roundup… the roundup happened anyway and the horses went to the auction. Unbranded horses were held back awaiting the courts decision. The court determined that the agreement was cancelled and that the horses were the property of Reservation authorities. Those horses needed help and many were picked up by members of the advocate community.under the Act. http://wildhorseeducation.org/2013/08/17/slaughter-auction-ends-fight-not-over/

Just last month we saw horses removed from Sheldon. Sheldon is under the jurisdiction of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) in our National Refuge system, but have no protections under the Act. Even though it may have been the intent of Legislators in 1971 to protect all horses and burros on federal land from the horrors of slaughter, those at Sheldon find themselves in danger repeatedly. Wild Horse Education is fighting for them as well. http://wildhorseeducation.org/2013/10/10/ruling-expected-next-week-in-sheldon-wild-horse-case/

The little ones that have come into our care are horses that our federal government does not protect. The little ones that arrived last night were stampeded by helicopter, sent to a kill auction, were taken in and then the stress on older moms was too much. The right thing was done… and the horses were protected from a brutal trip to Mexico or Canada to be slaughtered. But that left two little ones needed some TLC.

They have not stopped eating since they arrived.
