(Marta Williams, VP of Wild Horse Education)
The Farm Bill passed in U.S. House of Representatives on July 11 still has the King Amendment in it. Given the misnomer of the “Animal Cruelty Protection Act” by industrial agriculture puppet Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), the amendment would eliminate the few existing state laws that ban inhumane practices including extreme animal confinement in cages and crates, force-feeding of ducks, horse slaughter, and shark finning.
The King amendment has the potential to wipe out states’ laws to label genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Arizona’s law banning gestation crates, Michigan’s law banning veal crates, and California’s law banning battery cages could all be overturned along with state-specific puppy mill regulation, environmental protection, worker safety, and other protective laws.
King represents big agriculture not consumers. Contributors to Rep. King’s election campaigns include: seed and chemical companies (Monsanto, Syngenta), growers (Iowa Corn Growers’ Association, American Farm Bureau), processors (American Crystal Sugar, Ag Processors), the factory farms that convert GMO grains to animal products (Beef Products Inc., the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, National Pork Producers Council, International Dairy Foods Association), and the junk food companies pushing GMO ingredients like high fructose corn syrup and trans fats (Cargill, Coca-Cola, ConAgra).
Please send an email or handwritten letter to your senators and representatives asking them to remove the King Amendment from the Farm Bill. It is best if you can also follow up with a phone call.

Dear Congress Member:
Please oppose the King Amendment and remove it from the Farm Bill. This amendment by Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) removes needed protections for dogs, cats, horses and farm animals, including regulation of extreme confinement cages, puppy mills, horse slaughter, and shark finning.
It could also preempt a wide range of state laws governing critical issues like child labor, dangerous pesticides, labeling of farm-raised fish, and GMO labeling.
This legislation represents big agriculture not the consumer and it is a massive overreach and attack on states’ rights. Please oppose the King Amendment and remove it from the Farm Bill. Thank you.
Roundups will be starting in about ten days… keep checking back for news. Owyhee hearing on July 30th and we are waiting to see what direction Triple B takes (six briefs filed in 30 days)
